Banking checks and common risks — Review overdue

Review overdue: This guide remains overdue pending acceptance, rollout-day authority checks and any required qualified Thai review. It is not a compliance certificate.

This is general information for expatriates. Your bank, product, status, transaction and facts control. Thailand Expat Services is not a bank, payment provider, lawyer, tax adviser or AML/compliance reviewer and cannot confirm that a transaction is lawful, acceptable or suitable.

Deposit protection

The Deposit Protection Agency states that eligible protected baht deposits are covered up to THB 1,000,000 per depositor per protected institution. Accounts at the same institution are aggregated and due debts may be deducted under the applicable rules. Coverage depends on the depositor, institution, currency and product. Foreign-currency deposits, investment products and non-resident baht accounts are among the exclusions identified by the DPA.

Do not describe this as protection for every balance or product. Check the DPA scheme, protected depositors and protected financial products before relying on coverage. The current THB 1 million level took effect on 11 August 2021; the DPA scheme page was updated 1 April 2024 and was checked for this review on 9 August 2026.

Bank identity, source-of-funds and transaction checks

A bank may request identity, address, status, purpose, beneficiary, source-of-funds or supporting transaction evidence and may delay, restrict, reject or report activity under applicable law and its controls. Requirements are not universal and may change by institution, product, customer and transaction.

Provide accurate information. Do not split, disguise or misdescribe transactions to avoid a bank or authority check. For a legal, tax, property, business or AML question, obtain advice from a qualified Thai professional with the relevant scope.

Foreign exchange and supporting documents

The Bank of Thailand says foreign-currency purchase, sale, exchange or transfer must be conducted through authorised persons. Its current consolidated summary says authorised banks need supporting documents for transactions equivalent to USD 200,000 or above, except where the bank has performed the stated Know Your Business process. This does not create a universal property-registration threshold or guarantee that a smaller transfer needs no evidence.

Confirm the exact purpose and evidence with the authorised bank before sending funds. For property registration, also confirm the Land Office evidence with a qualified Thai property lawyer or the relevant Land Office.

Digital payments and fraud

Before approving a transfer or QR payment, verify the recipient name, amount and purpose in the bank application. Use only the bank's official application and contact channel; do not disclose passwords, PINs or one-time codes.

BOT guidance says digital transfer/payment limits may be assigned according to customer profile and may differ by institution. Do not rely on a generic daily limit. See the BOT Financial Threat FAQ.

If fraud is suspected:

  1. contact the bank immediately through its verified fraud channel;
  2. report suspected technology-enabled financial fraud through AOC 1441 and follow official instructions;
  3. make a police report where required or where personal safety/crime is involved;
  4. use BOT 1213/help channels for enquiries or complaints within BOT's remit, and ETDA 1212 for online/cyber complaint assistance.

An introducer cannot freeze an account or recover funds. No recovery outcome is guaranteed.

Carrying cash across Thailand's border

BOT's current summary states:

  • bringing into or taking out of Thailand foreign-currency banknotes above USD 15,000 or equivalent, or Thai-baht banknotes above THB 450,000, requires a Customs declaration;
  • Thai baht may be taken to countries bordering Thailand, Vietnam and China's Yunnan province up to THB 2 million, and to other countries up to THB 50,000, subject to the current rules;
  • other restrictions and evidence may apply.

Check the BOT consolidated exchange-control summary and Thai Customs immediately before travel. Do not use this guide as a declaration or permission.
