Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa — Review overdue

BOI currently publishes four LTR categories: Wealthy Global Citizen, Wealthy Pensioner, Work-from-Thailand Professional and Highly Skilled Professional, with eligible dependants under the program rules. Qualification is category-specific and BOI's current portal, announcement and checklist control.

The program is commonly described as a ten-year visa, but permission is structured in two five-year periods and continued qualification is checked. Do not describe the second period as automatic renewal.

A holder who will work in Thailand must follow BOI's current LTR work-permit process. LTR status is not a blanket exemption from employment, tax, professional-licensing or restricted-occupation rules. Obtain specialist advice for the proposed activity and personal tax position.

Use the BOI LTR portal eligibility tool and category checklist immediately before applying. Do not rely on thresholds copied into this guide; BOI has changed criteria and documentary alternatives. Qualification endorsement, visa issuance, permission to stay, work authorisation and admission remain separate decisions.
