Insurance FAQ Thailand | Visa Evidence, SSO, Policy Terms and OIC

By Thailand Expat Services Last reviewed: 9/10/2025

Conservative answers about insurance evidence, SSO eligibility, policy terms, dental benefits and OIC routes in Thailand.

These answers are general information. The issued policy, current public-scheme rules and the competent authority's checklist control the individual outcome.

Do I need insurance for my Thai visa?

Insurance evidence is not a universal requirement for every visa or extension. It depends on the exact category, transaction, location and competent authority. Check the current checklist from the Thai embassy or consulate, BOI LTR, or Immigration Bureau office processing the exact application before buying cover.

Can I use international insurance plans?

Acceptance cannot be inferred from a policy being international. Check territory, insurer eligibility, policy period, limits and certificate wording against the competent authority's current checklist, then obtain confirmation from that authority where the wording is unclear.

What's the difference between public and private insurance?

Eligibility for SSO or NHSO-administered schemes depends on the applicable rules and individual status. Private-policy eligibility and benefits depend on the issued contract. Confirm public-scheme eligibility with SSO or NHSO and compare any private policy's exclusions, limits, network and claims rules separately.

How do pre-existing conditions affect coverage?

Treatment of a medical history or pre-existing condition depends on the provider's application questions, underwriting decision and issued wording. Answer requested questions accurately and obtain any exclusion, limitation, moratorium, waiting period or acceptance decision in writing; no fixed period applies to every policy.

How should I assess dental coverage?

Dental eligibility and benefits depend on the issued policy. Check covered procedures, exclusions, waiting periods, provider or network rules, limits, deductibles, co-payments, pre-authorisation and payment method. Compare the actual quoted premium and terms with your documented needs; generic affordability or savings claims do not establish value.

Official checks and referral boundary

Verify an insurer or intermediary through the OIC licence service. The OIC publishes a consumer complaint route and hotline 1186. Licence status does not certify suitability, network access, claim payment or visa acceptance.
