Insurance

Choose insurance by the risk you need to cover

Start with health, travel, accident or property needs. Our guides help you compare the questions that matter before speaking with an insurer or licensed broker.

TL;DR: Possible ways to fund healthcare depend on eligibility and circumstances. Thai social-security benefits, employer cover, private policies, trip-specific travel cover and personal funds are not interchangeable. Check the current official source, issued policy and competent authority before relying on an option.

Before you start

Possible ways to fund healthcare

Depending on eligibility and circumstances, a person may use Thai social-security benefits, employer cover, an individual or group private policy, travel cover for a defined trip, or personal funds. These options are not interchangeable. Check eligibility, exclusions, limits, territory, provider network and claims rules before relying on any option.

Thai Social Security Office

Some insured persons can access medical benefits through the SSO system and a designated participating facility. Confirm your current insured-person status, contribution record, benefit entitlement and selected facility directly through SSO; employment alone does not prove entitlement.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is designed for the trip and eligibility described in its policy. It may differ materially from resident health cover. Check residence eligibility, trip duration, territory, medical and evacuation benefits, exclusions, pre-authorisation and renewal or return conditions in the issued wording.

Visa or extension evidence

Any insurance requirement depends on the exact category, transaction, location and competent authority. Thai embassies and consulates handle many applications abroad; BOI handles LTR qualification; Immigration Bureau offices handle in-country stay and extension processes. Use the current checklist for the authority processing the exact application and confirm it immediately before buying cover.

How to check an insurance option

  1. Policy scope: Read the issued benefits, limits, exclusions, waiting periods and territory.
  2. Provider access: Ask the insurer and hospital whether the exact policy is in-network, whether direct billing is available for the proposed treatment, and what pre-authorisation or patient payment applies.
  3. Claims process: Obtain the policy-specific notice, evidence and deadline instructions.
  4. Licence status: Check the insurer, agent or broker through OIC; licence status does not establish suitability or visa acceptance.
  5. Visa evidence: Compare the policy evidence with the current checklist from the competent authority.

HAI publishes hospital accreditation status. Accreditation does not establish insurance coverage, network participation, direct billing or claim acceptance.

Information and referral boundary

Thailand Expat Services provides general information and, if requested, may coordinate an introduction to an independently licensed provider or broker. We do not recommend, issue, bind, certify or guarantee insurance, claims or visa acceptance. Verify OIC licence status, policy terms and the competent authority's evidence requirements yourself. Any fee, commission, affiliate payment or other commercial relationship will be disclosed before you submit contact details for an introduction or we transfer them.

For policy-specific explanations, contact an independently licensed insurer or broker and verify its status through OIC. For immigration interpretation or certification, use the competent Thai authority and, where needed, a qualified Thai immigration professional. Neither Thailand Expat Services nor an OIC licence alone certifies visa acceptance or suitability.
