Travel insurance is designed for the trip and eligibility described in its issued policy. It may differ materially from resident health cover and should not be treated as an automatic substitute.
Check eligibility and trip scope
- Confirm residence and nationality eligibility, trip origin, destination, start and end dates, and any return or one-way-trip conditions.
- Check how the policy defines a trip and whether there are duration, age, purchase-timing or renewal restrictions.
- Read medical, evacuation, repatriation, cancellation, interruption, delay, baggage, liability and assistance benefits separately.
- Check pre-existing-condition, activity, alcohol, driving, motorcycle, work and destination exclusions.
- Confirm benefit limits, deductibles, sub-limits and whether pre-authorisation is required.
- Check who chooses an evacuation destination and how the assistance service must be contacted.
There is no evidence-backed universal minimum evacuation limit or generic evacuation cost suitable for every journey. Select limits only after reviewing the destination, available care, transport exposure and actual policy wording.
Credit-card and group cover
Do not assume cover applies because a card or employer arrangement exists. Confirm activation conditions, eligible people, trip definition, territory, benefits, exclusions, limits and claims channel from the provider.
During a claim or emergency
Use the policy’s official emergency channel where circumstances allow. Seek urgent assistance first when necessary, retain available records, and confirm notice, authorisation and document requirements for the actual event.
Provider and complaint checks
Verify an insurer or intermediary through the OIC broker and licence service. The OIC publishes a consumer complaint route and hotline 1186.
